The Unspoken Skill

Apart from advocacy, conference, negotiation and the other obvious skill sets taught on the BVC, the most important skill to learn and develop is time and task management.

Without this, the development and deployment of all the other skill sets suffer.

Time and task management skills also transfer into practice, when a barrister will have to manage a number of cases at anyone time whilst still being aware of the main issue's and tasks that require further attention.

Therefore choosing to manage your time is just as important as how you chose to use your time.

For me a mixture of an electronic organiser and a very detailed google calender allows me to manage the tasks I have to achieve in the amount of time I have available.

Electronic devises are not for everyone and it is worth experimenting with methods that work for you and most importantly that you will stick too.

First FRU Case

Today I received a thank you card from the client of my first Fru case. Although the outcome of my clients case was not a positive one she still took the time to thank me for representing her.

Nothing can take away the disappointment of losing a case, but client recognition and appreciation makes it a slightly less bitter pill to swallow.

FRU Induction Day

The Induction day was held at City University and started at 10:00am. Overall all I found the day really informative. We were given a booklet which contained handouts and materails on Social Security law, how FRU works and the type of things involved in being a FRU rep.

The majority of Social Security cases referred to FRU concerns either disability living allowance(DLA), attendance allowance (AA)or incapacity benefits (ICB). And as a beginner the majorty of my case's will either invilve DLA or ICB.

The next FRU qualifying step is undertaking a test involving a case secrnario and statutory interpretation.
